Croatia’s continental coastal climate will be quite chilly, while often sunny and pleasant still not the time of year for a swim in the sea!!
Snow on the mountain peaks makes Croatia’s ski resorts the place to go.
* February
Still cold, but the carnivals are beginning! With the onset of Lent carnivals are getting underway all over , with the Carnival of Rijeka being one of the largest, and on February 3rd the Feast of St Blaise is celebrated with dancing in the streets of
Dubrovnik.
* March
A change in the temperatures gives great weather conditions along the coast for hiking, cycling or rock climbing. If Easter falls in March, Holy Week will be celebrated in towns throughout the country – in Korcula the streets of the old town are filled with processions of Korcula’s age-old brotherhoods.
* April
A perfect time to visit the
Plitvice
Lakes
National Park when the waterfalls are cascading in torrents, the lakes are full and the forests are green and budding with Spring. The Karlovac rivers are flowing at their peak, swollen from the winter snow and rain – the most exciting time of year for kayakers and rafters.
* May
A beautiful month to visit, along with September our personal favourites . Beautiful warm sunshine, without the intense heat of summer and the crowds of tourists. The
Adriaticis warming up enough to enjoy a swim in the crystal clear water.
* June
Perfect coastal and island-hopping weather. The ferry services to the islands are in full swing now making the hundreds of islands easy to visit and explore, or enjoy boating on the glorious
Adriatic. Festivals are springing up all over the country – The Festival of Contemporary Dance and the Festival of Animated Film in Zagreb or Evenings of Medieval Music in the churches of Rab.
* July
Summer is buzzing now and coastal resorts filling up with tourists! Summer music festivals are at their height – The Dubrovnik Summer Festival with classical musicians in the old town, the amphitheatre at
Pula with evening performances under the stars, music festivals in
Split and smaller celebrations at most resorts, towns and islands.
* August
The Adriatic coast at its busiest!! but inland enjoying a quieter time. A good time to visit the beautiful inland towns and cities, whose residents will be cooling off on the coast, or escape the crowded beaches by taking to the sea and enjoying a relaxing sail on the clear Adriatic waters. The weather is at its hottest, so maybe not the time for hiking in the heat of midday, make sure you drink plenty of water and keep the suntan cream topped up!!
* September
The high tourist season is beginning to wane, leaving resorts quieter.The weather is still beautifully warm, the days still long and the sea warm enough to enjoy a relaxed swim. Our favourite time to visit! The end of the month brings Truffle Days in
Istria, when you can enjoy delicious truffle based recipes in the restaurants and buy fresh truffles from the roadside.
* October
The weather is starting to turn a little cooler now and the trees are beginning to change to the beautiful colours of Autumn, but it is often still warm enough to swim in the waters of southern
Dalmatia.A truly delightful time for hiking in the hills and mountains. For classical music lovers, Baroque Evenings begin at the end of September through to October in the town of Varazdin north of
Zagreb.
* November
The coastal season is winding down with the onset of winter but both Zagreb and
Dubrovnik are still alive with a good range of concerts both classical and pop.
The mountain regions will be cold, but getting ready for the onset of skiing.
* December
The coast has closed for the year, but inland will be a winter wonderland when snow falls transform the countryside and the smell of wood burning stoves fills the air. Christmas celebrations will be happening all over the country with Dubrovnik being a truly special place to celebrate New Year’s Eve.
