NATURIST BEACHES

Croatia has been a popular holiday destination for lovers of the naturist way of life for the last five decades, especially German and Dutch naturists.

History of organized naturist vacations in Croatia dates back to the 1930's. The island of Rab is rightly referred to as the pioneer of naturism on the Adriatic. The month of August 1936 is frequently mentioned as the official beginning of naturism on Rab. When King Edward the Eighth stayed on Rab Island, the Rab authorities allowed him and his wife to take a nude swim in the bay of Kandarola. To this day the bay is still referred to as the "English Beach" or "Engleska plaza". Real naturist expansion started in 1960's when the first naturist camps were opened in Istra and Dalmatia. In those days more than 100.000 naturists spent their vacation in Croatia each year.

Koversada is Croatia’s oldest naturist resort. Accepting its first guests in 1961, it has an excellent international reputation as a well developed and equipped establishment. In the beautiful parklands, olive, pine and fig trees provide welcome shade from the midday sun.Koversada is approximately 60 miles south of Trieste. The resort is named after the Island of Koversada, situated 200 yards offshore and linked by a footbridge, and from where naturist activities have spread over the years. The region was part of Italy until the end of World War II, and the Italian influence, particularly in architecture, is still strong. Everywhere, you’ll come across place names on road signs in both Italian and Croatian.      -

Croatia now hosts at least 30 official naturist resorts, campsites, tourist villages, hotels, apartments and beaches all indicated by “FKK” and many more unofficial strips of beaches and bathing spots along the coast.           -

Considering the Countries liberal traditions toward naturism and a large number of naturist resorts and beaches, Croats themselves are surprisingly still a bit shy when it comes to naturism. They only aspire to less than 5% of all guests in Croatia's naturist resorts. Compare todays figures to that of the 1980's and you will find that the numbers of organized naturists in Croatia has significantly decreased, in the last two decades. Many agree the reason is a stronger influence from the Catholic Church in todays society. Today many Croats prefer unofficial or secluded beaches to take off their clothes. Naturism is still wholeheartedly suported by official Croatian goverment bodies.

Naturism is well accepted all along the coast of Croatia and sometimes the naturist beach is in a designated area just away from the main beach – often a charge is made to gain admittance to these areas.  Quite often clothing is optional in these allocated areas.

-

Naturist beaches are marked with “FKK” signs for “Freikorperkultur,” German for Free Body Culture.

-

There are wild beaches where you can choose whether or not to bare all – one day naturists may be predominant the next it may be swimsuits! The choice is down to the individual without any embarrassment either way.

Croatia’s official naturist facilities often focus on different groups of people – families, adults, gays and those where everyone is welcome; beaches are sometimes sectioned into these categories.

-

Naturist beaches are not in remote hard to find areas, often they are just a short walk away from the centre of the town, village or resort.
