Camping in Croatia
My wife & I have, for several years travelled throughout
Europe, in a large Motorhome, exploring beautiful countries, we had never before visited. As with all people we have our favourites and Croatia, is most definitely one of the top three for us. Each time we visit we are astounded by the lack of British, Belgian & Scandinavian visitors to this country and in turn their campsites. Why should the Germans, Italians, Hungarians Slovenians & French have this stunning country all to themselves?

We have visited many of the major attractions throughout the country but any not yet found, we will try to visit and in turn write about at the end of our summer trip in 2008.

Firstly and most importantly there are numerous campsites from
Istria, all the way down past
Dubrovnik. Planning a trip can be very easy, because of the amount of sites available. Due to current Croatian camping legislation, some campsites are quite small, created as a part of a person's large garden, the purpose of this is to provide an important source of income for that family. These camps usually provide camping facilities for up to about 20 people. These smaller camps often have limited facilities, with the basics of showers and toilets, as well as basic cooking facilities, electricity and water. However many are large sites offering all the major facilities & many with WiFi for you internet fans. Check out our Camping Advertisers in the Lifestyle Portfolio adverts for some excellent deals!

Croatia has over 925,000 beds available for tourist accommodation, over 25% of these are in campsites, which are recording the highest rate of growth tourist accommodation. There are over 500 registered campsites, of which approx 285 fall into the mini-camp category (lodgings in households). The total accommodation capacity of the campsites is over 240,000 people. The distribution of camp accommodation capacities in the Croatian tourism regions are as follows: Istra: 51% - Kvarner and the Highlands: 21% - Dalmatia: 27% - Inland Croatia: 1%.

Croatian campsites are classified from 1* to 4*. These standards are now similar to those used in the rest of Europe. A new classification has been created with the aim of upgrading the standard of camps, camps will now be rated from 2* to 5*. The implementation of this, will lead to many new investments, which will still further improve standards at Croatian campsites. One such new site with superb facilities, we stayed at last year was in Split.

Most campsites are open from May to October but there are a large number of sites that are now open all year. Campsites that are open all year provide all the necessary amenities (heated sanitary facilities, living area's etc)

The weather is as you would expect is glorious, getting hotter as you venture south towards
Dubrovnik, as you will see on our other pages there really are an abundance of stunning places to visit. The majority we found, can be visited in larger Camper Vans which is good news for those who have larger vans. Our own van is close to 8 metres long and we tow a Jeep behind, we have not encountered any problems anywhere in Croatia. Border controls both at Slovenia and Bosnia & Herzegovina giving no problems what so ever. Why Bosnia & Herzegovina? Because to get to Dubrovnik you pass through a 12 km stretch of coast road, which was awarded in 1945 to Bosnia & Herzegovina to give the country its own access to the sea. Cigarettes, Food & Diesel were slightly cheaper in 2007 and although the currency is the KM ( konvertabilina marka ) the Croatian Kuna and the Euro were easily accepted.

Wild Camping : Camping outside of designated campsites in Croatia is not permitted but, in line with changing camping trends, a new kind of parking area has been added. The REST AREA CAMP, has been classified with, Minimum Conditions. These are accommodation facilities along public thoroughfares that provide camping services to all kinds of visitors for an overnight stay or even a brief stopover.
